Feyenoord manager Arne Slot wanted to sign Yankuba Minteh before he went to Newcastle United. Minteh, a player from The Gambia, impressed many European clubs with his performance at Odense, a Danish team. He scored four goals and gave six assists in his first 17 games there. Despite interest from many clubs, Minteh ended up joining Newcastle for around £7 million.
But now, Minteh is going to play for Feyenoord on loan for a season to develop further. His manager at Feyenoord wanted him to stay with the team permanently.
Feyenoord’s scouts liked Minteh when he was at Odense. Then, the General Manager of Feyenoord, Dennis te Kloese, talked to the coaching staff. Newcastle wanted to loan Minteh to another club, so that’s how he came to us. Newcastle didn’t ask for any specific playing time or conditions.
Minteh has done well in the Netherlands. He gradually became a part of Feyenoord’s starting lineup in the first two months of the season. He scored his first goal for the club in his fourth game, helping them win 5-1 against Utrecht. He also scored in home games against Heerenveen and Go Ahead Eagles in the last two weeks. His good performance also helped Gambia qualify for the African Cup of Nations when he scored his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw with Congo last month.
