Massive awareness programmes have been initiated by the ‘Tripura Disaster Management Authority’ (TDMA) on the occasion of International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction on October 13 next.
The awareness programmes assumes significance in view of the earthquake threat that the region faces.
International Day for Disaster Reduction is being observed on Wednesday – second Wednesday of October -to raise awareness about disaster risk reduction. It encourages people and governments to participate in building resilient communities and nations.
‘But, Tripura government decided to observe the ‘International Day for Disaster Reduction’ on any convenient day of October, as it would not be possible during long festival holidays’, said a TDMA official.
All the subdivision of Tripura would observe the ‘International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction’ on October 13 and as part observation TDMA in association of sub-divisional authorities will organise ‘student march’ in several schools to enhance awareness among the school students and to sensitize them towards disasters and their management.
Apart from this, film shows, mock drills, lectures on disaster management and demonstrations for college students would also be organised in various subdivision of the state.
There will be separate competitions on the theme ‘Safety from disasters’ for the school students and participation in different categories painting, poster drawing and slogan writings.
The National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), the apex National Institute of India with the nodal responsibilities for human resource development, capacity building, training, research, documentation, public awareness and policy advocacy in disaster management will also observe the day with several awareness programmes
